singing brings you closer to your soul...

The Vocal Academy

Singing | Songwriting | Beginner Piano |Basic Musicianship

Singing (including karaoke sing-a-long training) can improve your self-esteem and self-confidence, vocal range, breath control, diction, vowel usage, performance ability, and "soul" connection. In a singing class you will learn about dynamic markings, breath markings, microphone technique, and repertoire selection. And, if you so choose, you can also learn beginner piano skills, basic musicianship skills, duet, trio, or quartet training, improving your harmonic ear, improving and learning improvisational skills. I teach classical voice technique with an emphasis on popular music, like jazz, blues, folk, some country, as well as musical theatre and even light opera. I usually teach for an hour with the first half hour being spent on vocalise, and the second half hour spent on performance. The cost is $60.00 per hour if you pay as you go, or take advantage of our 4 lesson package deal (non-refundable and must be used in the calendar year purchased) where you buy 4 lessons and pay $200). Otherwise, you can continue at the $60 per one-hour lesson price indefinitely.

I believe everyone can benefit from taking voice lessons. Why people take them is a different story. Some people take them to improve their self esteem and confidence. Actors take them to improve their acting voice and projecting ability. Singers, to improve their singing voice either chorally or solo. Children take them to learn beginner piano and solfege. Sisters or other family members take them together to learn a special duet for a wedding or other family function. Small groups take them to improve their ears for harmony. YOU can take them just because you want to!

More and more students are interested in karaoke style sing-a-long training. Office functions and family gatherings often involve karaoke, and to feel more confident, pick a few songs to work on in the privacy of my studio and then when the opportunity arises for a karaoke sing-a-long, you'll be ready, confident, and have more fun!

Songwriting lessons would entail looking at some ideas on writing melodies, lyrics, titles, hooks, identifying easy chord structures, and we'll discuss who to sell your song to, and how to get that demo made, etc., Bring your songs to be critiqued, or come prepared to write a few new songs. What about this songwriting workshop?

The songwriting workshop I facilitate is entitled: Songwriting 101 and it's for budding songwriters, and seasoned songwriters alike. Here's the write-up:
Songwriting 101: Are you a budding songwriter or a seasoned one? Perhaps you're a beginner looking to write your first couple of songs? Then this workshop is for you. We'll give you some ideas on writing melodies, lyrics, titles, hooks, identify easy chord structures, and we'll discuss who to sell your song to, and how to get that demo made, etc., Bring your songs to be critiqued, or come prepared to write a few new songs in this twelve-week workshop (based on two hour sessions) entitled Songwriting 101. The sessions are to be held at The Vocal Academy studio. Contact me for dates, times, and fees.

Beginner piano would offer adults mostly, but some children, the opportunity to learn basic chording skills, and familiarity with the piano. At the end of your lessons you would know three major scales, chording patterns, and be able to play through easy piano material.

Basic musicianship is where you would learn scales, intervals, ear training, etc., The lesson is really tailored to what you need to learn. Some people use these lessons to prepare for a college audition. You can set it up any way you want.
